Annual Day of Caring

On Saturday, April 26th 2014, United Way Manitowoc County, Inc. and Comcast held their annual Day of Caring and Comcast Cares Day.  This event is a countywide day of community service.  Teams of volunteers provide much needed labor to complete projects for local nonprofit agencies that could not otherwise get it done.

This year a total of 180 individuals participated in the day’s events.  Volunteers along with project site leaders met at the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA to kick off the day with coffee, bagels, fruit, and motivational words from local community leaders.  Tracy Geenen, Executive Director at United Way, talked about the importance of volunteerism to our community.  Thanking all of the volunteers along with Tracy included Manitowoc’s Mayor Justin Nickels and Two River’s City Manager Greg Buckley.

Volunteers were assigned to seven different project sites: Manitowoc River Watershed held beach clean-up at several area beaches; Pinecrest Historical Village hosted spring cleaning projects; Child Abuse Prevention Taskforce of Manitowoc County held a Kids Superhero 5K Walk where volunteers helped by cheering on participants and provided safety; Woodland Dunes Nature Center asked volunteers to help with landscaping; United Way completed clean up at the previous building and put some finishing touches up in the new location; Lincoln Park Zoo completed the Women’s Leadership Born Learning Trail along with some landscaping; and Marco Services, Inc. had volunteers complete painting projects.
